Becoming a Master
About me
As a child, I had many experiences which led me to the bedside of several family members, where I became immersed in the wonder of the medical field. At 10 years old, I made my first 911 call, on behalf of my pregnant mother. I received a quick anatomy lesson as well as learned about the consequences of a low lying placenta. I was an active participant in timing contractions, observing heart rate monitors and later on that day, swaddling, recording breastfeeding attempts and noting the doting nursing staff completing regular skin colour assessments on what turned out to be, a sickly baby. From the age of 11, I was studying the relationship between the small fluid filled bags, tubing strung through the beeping computer-like pumps which was attached to the little waif of a thing that was my baby sister. Over the years, our family has grown comfortable in this medical world and since my childhood days, I have developed a deep seeded desire to give back to the field that has offered my family so much.
Following completion of my LPN program, I knew I was not finished school; I had more to learn, and more to give. After only 1 year of practice, I enrolled in the Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing program through Athabasca University. As a single mother of a young son, I was able to find balance in maintaining an LPN position with Alberta Health Services at the Drumheller Health Center, while studying full-time. Although most are surprised at my achievements during this time in my life, my greatest supporters are not, as they know I am very organized and determined to achieve any goal I have set for myself.
Within 3 years, I had achieved my goal of obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and became registered with CARNA (College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta).
I currently hold a leadership position with Alberta Health Services, which is non-unionized and am responsible for the oversight of 3 rural Home Care sites Drumheller, Hanna and Elnora. I am hoping to utilize my vast experiences in several departments and knowledge gained through my studies with Athabasca University to advance my career in leadership.
I have a wonderful husband with a charming Newfoundland background and together we have 2 gorgeous children; a 15 year old son and 7 year old daughter. On a personal level, my goal is to continue to motivate and inspire my children to chase their dreams, no matter which path they choose to get there.......
